Radiology Learning at FK UIN Jakarta: Medical Students Introduced to Basic Ultrasound Techniques

Faculty of Medicine Building, FK Online News – The Faculty of Medicine (FK) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta organized an Ultrasonography (USG) learning session for medical students as part of strengthening clinical skills in radiological diagnostic examinations on Wednesday (March 4, 2026).

The session aimed to introduce students to the use of ultrasound as one of the standard tools in patient examinations while also providing a basic understanding of human anatomy through imaging visualization.

The speaker for the session, Ayat Rahayu, M.Kes., Sp.Rad (Subsp. RI (K)), explained that early-stage ultrasound training focuses on introducing basic anatomical structures and the ability to identify organs through imaging.

“For medical students, this learning activity aims to introduce ultrasound as one of the standard tools in patient examinations. At the initial stage, the focus is on basic anatomy—recognizing and identifying anatomical organs through ultrasound examination,” she explained.

She added that for students using ultrasound equipment for the first time, the main challenge lies in operating the device and determining the correct examination position to obtain clear anatomical images.

“Beginners usually face difficulties when determining the position of the probe or device to obtain a clear anatomical image. In addition, ultrasound examinations are highly dependent on the operator who performs them,” she said.

According to her, ultrasound results are also influenced by the patient’s physical condition. Factors such as body composition can affect how easily internal organs can be visualized.

“Ultrasound imaging is also affected by the patient’s condition. In patients with a slimmer body, organs are usually easier to visualize, whereas in patients with larger body composition the examination can be more challenging,” she added.

As part of the clinical education process, ultrasound training is designed to enhance medical students’ basic skills in using diagnostic technology. Through this activity, students are introduced to the fundamental techniques of ultrasound operation, the identification of anatomical structures through imaging, and the principles of radiological examinations that support the medical diagnostic process.
